Meet the ATB Financial Markets Team


Rob Laird

Rob Laird joined ATB Financial Markets group in 2008. As head of the group, he is responsible for the day-to-day operations and ongoing business development across all products. Rob holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Victoria, and prior to ATB, Rob worked for the New York Mercantile Exchange developing Canadian specific crude and natural gas products. Earlier in his career, Rob was an Institutional Natural Gas Broker for 10 years working with a broad range of customer ranging from banks, utilities, hedge funds and merchant energy traders.

Having grown up in Calgary, Rob continues to believe that Alberta is one of the best places in the world to do business and to live in. As an active member for the community, he continues to do local charity work which has included The Calgary Stampede, Energy Fore Friends, Jamie’s Pre-school, Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games, and World Cup ski racing events. When not at ATB, Rob enjoys being in the mountains, skiing, hiking, and mountain biking.


Cynthia Chan

Cynthia Chan joined ATB in December 2013. Before ATB, she spent 11 years as a corporate foreign exchange dealer with Western Union Business Solutions and Thomas Cook.

Cynthia’s expertise lies in the design and management of efficient hedging regimes for large and small businesses looking to mitigate their foreign exchange risk. Her account management strategy is rooted in the belief that a client’s business model needs to be totally understood and the hedging tools need to be customized to perform with maximum efficiency in that context. Cynthia was a graduate of the University of Alberta and holds a BA in Economics.

Cynthia loves to spend time with her children and volunteering at their school. She also enjoys travelling with her family.


Bennett Cheung

Bennett joined ATB in September 2008 as a foreign exchange trader. His role is to provide pricing on various foreign exchange products such as spot, forward, and options for the ATB Financial Markets Group.

Bennett graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. He passed all three levels of the CFA exams and is currently in the process of applying for his charter. Before joining ATB, Bennett worked as a software engineer and financial analyst in Calgary and Edmonton.

In his spare time, Bennett is an avid poker player and soccer player.


Corey (CJ) Hilling

CJ Hilling joined ATB in December of 2007. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the UofL and an MBA from Queen's University. At ATB, CJ works on the Financial Markets desk marketing commodities, foreign exchange, and interest rate products to ATB's business clients.

Prior to ATB, CJ worked in the crude pipeline industry under various roles of crude marketing and trading groups. Such roles included the pricing of heavy crude oil and railed condensate, as well as the midstream movements of oil, condensate, and LPG's via truck, rail, and pipeline.

CJ appreciates ATB's open-minded approach in regards to product development and innovative client solutions.


Janek Guminski

Janek Guminski joined ATB Financial Markets in 2011 as Director of Foreign Exchange and Interest Rates. In this role, Janek helps ATB clients protect themselves from potentially negative moves in the currency as well as from rising interest rates. He has a business degree from the University of British Columbia as well as a CFA designation.

Janek has worked in a variety of industries from micro-brewing to mining. Prior to joining ATB, he spent ten years in capital markets while living in Toronto where he never once cheered for the Leafs.

Janek is pleased to have made the move to Alberta. He is an avid golfer and marathon runner.


Chris Fricke

Chris joined ATB in November 2018 as a Consultant in the Financial Markets Group and is now a Director of Foreign Exchange Sales.

Prior to joining the Financial Markets team, Chris spent over 20 years in the Global Capital Markets group of a Canadian bank with placements in his hometown of Winnipeg followed by Tokyo, London, Toronto, and Calgary. Over his tenure in Capital Markets he specialized in large deal flow from M&A activity and shifts in FX Reserve composition, as well as FX Derivative Structures and NDF markets. /p>

hris takes a careful and methodic approach to helping to identify and measure risk exposures and thereafter deriving customized potential solutions for ATB's clients.

Chris has an MBA from the Johnson School of Business at Cornell University and an undergrad degree in Finance from the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba.

After much travel, Chris and his family are thrilled to call Calgary their home. They have come to greatly appreciate the sense of community around them as well as the incredible standard of living in Alberta. In addition to his favourite pastimes of tennis and golf, Chris and his wife are active volunteers in the community, particularly as it comes to their children's various sports and arts activities.


Mark Johnson

Mark joined ATB in October 2016 as Director of Interest Rate sales.

Prior to joining the Financial Markets team, Mark spent over 20 years in FX and Interest Rate derivatives trading and sales for 2 Canadian schedule A banks in both London, England and Toronto, specializing in the CAD and USD markets.

Mark has an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University and a Diploma in Project Management from George Washington University.

Mark specializes in the identification of risk and the development and offering of solutions to negate that risk. In his role at ATB, he seeks to identify the inherent risks in our client’s financials, overlay the relevant threats of volatility and change in the financial markets and to develop appropriate hedging strategies and solutions for our clients.

Mark is very happy to be based in Alberta, where he can ski and cycle in his spare time. He is a keen soccer enthusiast, holding a Canadian B license in coaching, and a huge rugby fan. He was on the Board of Directors of Rugby Ontario from 2013 until 2016.


Shane Hawryluk

Shane Hawryluk joined ATB in November of 2011. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta. Shane works on the commodity desk marketing financial energy products to and for ATB energy clients.

Shane joined the energy industry in 1995 and has worked for several physical storage and trading companies as well as other financial institutions in both trading and marketing capacities. Previous to joining ATB, Shane managed his own energy brokerage business.

Shane loves Calgary, the entrepreneurial spirit of the community, and in particular that of ATB's clients.
