Alberta still losing people to other provinces

Alberta still losing people to other provinces

Annual interprovincial migration data released today by Statistics Canada show that 15,131 more people left Alberta for other parts of Canada than came here from another province or territory between July 2016 and July 2017. Alberta has lost people to the rest of Canada for eight consecutive quarters, with the net outflow over the last two years totalling 30,239.

This reverses a pattern of strong net inflow into Alberta prior to the provincial recession. Our province gained 131,669 residents from other parts of Canada between July 2010 and July 2015.

If economic conditions improve as expected, the net loss of people to other parts of Canada should reverse itself by next year as expanding employment opportunities in Alberta draw in more migrants. A return to net annual inflows of 30,000 or more is, however, unlikely in the short-term. The new normal is probably going to be a more modest, but still positive, inflow of people into Alberta from the rest of Canada.

Despite the outflow interprovincially, Alberta’s population continued to grow during the provincial recession. There were 108,607 more people in Alberta as of July 2017 compared to two years ago. This growth is due to strong natural increase (births minus deaths) and positive net international migration into the province.
